UC San Diego Price Center Sewer Improvements was chartered by UC San Diego in early 2019 in response to repeatedly failing sewer infrastructure in the University Center neighborhood on campus. Latitude 33 was hired as the Executive Engineer on the project to help identify the problematic areas of the sewer within the neighborhood; create solutions to mitigate future failures; and execute the work with UC San Diego and a future contractor, all within an expedited schedule of 4 months to construction.
Latitude 33 initiated a project scoping phase, which included leading efforts to identify issues within the existing system, discussion with FM staff, review of maintenance logs and CCTV of mains. The project scoping phase identified 3 areas within the system that needed structural replacement; alongside multiple other areas that existing infrastructure could be retrofitted in place. Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Document schedules were created for each of the areas to either be executed individually; or as part of one large project in the summer months. Due to the extreme schedule of the project, a fresh approach to the creation and delivery of the final Construction Documents was required. An integrated review was established with UC San Diego staff utilizing software such as Bluebeam to allow for real time collaboration on drawings and cut down on formal review cycles with the University. This allowed for creations of drawings in roughly half of the traditional timeline needed, which allowed the project to be constructed during the summer months on campus. Due to the intense QA/QC process during the design of the project, minimal RFI’s and construction delays occurred during construction.
